GOING TO LONDON..WANT TO SEE A SHOW?..UPDATE..COLIN HOLMES MAGIC OF THE MUSICALS.

NEW MUSICALS IN LONDON UPDATE. SEE PREVIOUS BLOGS FOR LONDON SHOWS IN MARCH 2010.

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM SPELLING BEE.5.

This is hardly a musical...more an experiance. Medium family entertainment with a cast running through a spelling contest with fairly mundane musical accompaniment. They sing...oh yes...but there are no numbers that spring readily to my mind. Popular in America but I don't see full houses for this one.

BETTY BLUE EYES.

In preview as I write this. Have not seen it. Based on the film "A private function".

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET.3.

Another popular American show celebrating the music of Johnny Cash,Elvis Presley,Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Not a musical. More a collection of songs sung in the style of these artists.Product.

THE UMBERELLAS OF CHERBOURG.3.

Pretty music but the whole is better in the original film although that is in french with subtitles. More songs and more theatrical dialogue added which doesn't add to what was a charming film. I always ask why? Who thought this was a good idea when there are many other American musicals of far better quality than these new ones coming to us this year. I suppose it all comes down to money. Expensive musicals are far too risky....Let's play safe. Never a good idea in the Musical Theatre.

THE WIZARD OF OZ.6.

The new sparkling Andrew LLoyd Webber production with a few extra Tim Rice lyriced songs. T.V. promoted show with new star Danielle Hope in the lead and Micheal Crawford as The Wizard. Sparkling that is because of the wonderful sets and impessive tornado but the show is a well treaded path holding no surprises for adult audiences although charming any children who enter the theatre. It's a family show and kids will love it....but adults will not be surprised....they will, however appreciate their kid's enjoyment because the magic is for them to perceive proberbly for the first time. If you've seen the film several times, well, here it is again only live!
