SIMON COWELL'S SATURDAY NIGHT ON ITV.
It seems as if last Saturday night belonged to ITV svengali Simon Cowell as RED AND BLACK and
X factor took over the main scheduling. With ads for future progammes knitted in to real ads not
forgetting numerous Maggie Smith clips from DOWNTON ABBEY the whole evening became an
enormous plug for Autumn on ITV. Even Jonaphon Ross was in RED and BLACK pre-empting
his appearance later in his chat show.
X FACTOR.
Last year the X factor lost some of it's sparkle without Cowell and with a paucity of talented
performers. By the time it got to the live studio shows it crumbled even further and became
not as compulsive viewing as previous years. This year it has improved but showed signs of heavy
manipulation with contestants appearing like geeks (Susan Boyle reflections) and then giving
excellant singing accounts of themselves.... much to our surprise? One female singer-songwriter
was portrayed as extremely nervous and then delivered an "Adele" perfection song. Another
poor girl was encouraged to sing like "Pink" and then destroyed by the panel for doing so.
Manipulation for entertainment was my immeadiate response, but after saying that there were
three interesting singers in the mix and provided they are not forced to sing what the producers
insist upon and what they want to sing in the future .....all of them were worth the final live showdowns.

just press buttons and can win £500,000. To do so they have to make a decision on various
obscure talents who are red or black. A fitful waste of time. Still boring.

PHILLIP AND MARGARET JONES FROM LYMT ON MAGIC OF THE MUSICALS. THE TOP 13 SHOWS CHOSEN BY AMATEURS.
Phillip and Margaret Jones were guests on MAGIC OF THE MUSICALS on Sunday. They are the
directors and inaugarators of the Llandudno Youth Music Theatre and we discussed the difficulty
of finding a "Box Office" show for any Amateur Society in Britain. Do people want Rodgers and Hammenstein or something newer like OUR HOUSE recently performed by the LYMS at Venue
Cymru. A tricky question. Below is the list chosen by Amateur Societies in Britain from August 2012
to June 2013.
1....SOUND OF MUSIC.
2....GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERAS.
3....WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND.
4....THE PRODUCERS.
4....ACORN ANTIQUES.
6....BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

9....SWEET CHARITY.

11....GUYS AND DOLLS.
11....ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.
11....LES MISERABLES.
There are only thirteen shows because many other shows had only two choices. Societies choices were
down 40% but this could be because that have not yet made their final choice yet or, they no longer
exist, or,they're not doing a show in this Olympic year, or, they put on a simple musical revue.Finances
are difficult in this recessional year and costs have not reduced.High ticket prices is not the answer as
this dissuades larger audiences.

in sixties type backings. YOU WERE ONLY FOOLING a commercial release hoping to
follow in the footsteps of DEAN MARTIN's EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY. It did
work in America but now here. However there are some good tracks but he should never
have tried TOM JONES's It's not unusual. Mistake! The Country album is much better with
the Damone voice caressing the ballads with great feeling. Two albums for the price of one.
