A CD only available online. If you do not know Jackie Gleason's musical work and you like
slow lush Christmas music this album is for you. Known Primarily for his Comedic shows
like the" Honeymooners" Gleason released several easy listening albums on Capitol records.
This Christmas release from several years ago includes two previous albums and therefore
24 tracks. Only the second 12 are seasonal but these tracks standout as full orchestration
is used plus choral singers. You sink into your chair with a glass of brandy and the music
wafts over in the Marshmellow world of winter.

X-FACTOR ON TV .SHOULD BE BETTER THAN THIS.
THE X FACTOR. THE FINAL.
Losing viewers is sad. Being an entertainer/Disc Jockey this Simon Cowell programme used to
be a very trendy,popular programme with young and old and you could guarantee a good reaction
from audiences with tracks from the show. Now...it has almost become cheesy and old-hat.
Despite changes this year it has not improved mainly due to the judges positions. Mentoring
acts is a fatal flaw.Each judge will never critisize it's own act, therefore cliches abound in
their judgement not to forget Louis Walsh who has a dictionary of said comments. The judges
should be professionals in the music industry who know what they're talking about and do not
mince words. Tell them like it is. The live audiences will react in their own way. Get rid
of those returned studio auditions and bring back Simon Cowell as head judge. Dump
backstories or at least don't use heartrending pulls on our voting emotions. It would be
nice if voting could be tied up with downloading a costed track from the show.You pay
to download the singer you like is always a genuine voting idea.....but most importantly
don't allow TV viewers to fast forward the judges opinions ! Most people do!

Unusual and interesting. Some religious themes,some sad songs,and some
commercial pop. the songs grow on you the more you listen and this album
is the best he has ever made solo. I like it. Finding out that he has now written
all the songs for a new American Musical I feel Mr Barlow's talent is going
to soar. ****.
HARRY CONNICK JNR....CHRISTMAS ALBUM WHAT A NIGHT. SONY (released last

the sugarplum fairy / It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.
Very Jazzy album that would not please all his fans. He produced, orchestrated and
sings on the album that I found unusual and ,in my opinion , a little misguided for a
festive album. The orchestrations were strangely jazz orientated which doesn't seem to
work with Christmas carols. ....however there are some good moments on the album.***.

FRANK SINATRA ALBUM ON COLIN HOLMES EASY LISTENING SHOW.OCTOBER 8TH.
POINT OF NO RETURN...FRANK SINATRA...CD CAPITOL RECORDS.

I'll be seeing you / Memories of you / Lean baby.
This is the album Sinatra recorded with old friend Alex Stordahl as a last favour
and reunion with his past master. It was one of the contractual albums( 1 of 3)
that he had to record before leaving for his own new label...Reprise. It has been
said he rushed through it leaving quickly after sessions were finished without
listening to playbacks. If that, indeed was the case, he certainly know how to
put pure professionalism on vynyl as every track is a masterpiece. He's sung them
before...sure...but with new arrangements, he knew what he was doing.
The last four tracks were not released in September 61 as the liner notes infer.
They are the two singles Sinatra recorded after he had just signed with Capitol
in 1953 including Lean Baby, very modern at the time. Elvis wasn't around for
another three years. The extra four tracks, not really mixing well with the rest
of the album are however a good bonus. ****.

I was interested to see how the X factor was changing this year after losing ratings
to that "Dancing programme" on the other side. Viewers must have been shocked to
see the cattle market experiance greatly enhanced this year. Judged by
the judges,judged by large audiences, re-judged by both in a seemingly musical
chair episode of unbelievable error -filled judgement. Is reality like this ? The
consistant tearful competitors of both sexes hopefully hoping their tears will
somehow engage with sympathy from the live audience, the TV audience ,
the judges, or anyone....please!Help me ! No. In the real reality tears will
get you nowhere at an entertainment audition. The producers of the entertainment
will pass on you for the next person....then you might get a callback.Then, you might
get another callback. Then, you still might not get what you want. Tears will be
ignored. That's show-biz. The X factory is not. It's about ratings.
There's still more tears, buckets of them, because now it's book camp time when
fifty percent of those remaining will be eliminated by the four judges. Then the real
programme starts with the same back-stories, tears, and judgements as we head
tediously to the final three, or two, followed by a Christmas No 1, an album
and then possibly C-list obscurity. In the "real" end it's about a really good song
that lasts.....not about the winner.
The X factory just repeats itself year after year and loses TV audiences. Soulful
tearful,noisy female singers. Cute young men. Boring groups. It goes on and on.
There is a young woman with glasses who has a nice tone to her voice singing
simple songs....not unlike the young lady who won "The Voice" earlier in the
year. She could win.......but I feel the ratings for Strictly come dancing and it's
straighforward family entertainment appeal will be the channel that most people
switch to. No more tears.

THE VOICE ON BBC.
THE VOICE.
Opening several weeks ago THE VOICE came in for it's second series
on BBC TV. The premise being that the voice is more important than
anything else and that the four stars as judges can only swing round in their
chairs when the voice they hear us enough for them to join their winning
team. The idea is good.....however....last year after the competitors are
picked the ratings slid, and the final show that toured theatres was cancelled
we assume for lack of tickets being sold. The main reason for this is
the idea of the voice that is most important disappears, and artists are
gathered together to duet each other off the stage. So much for the voice !
The programme then falls into X-factor revival as the public has to vote
for their favourite. The four stars then become key to the programme to
a large degree and the contestants fade into the background. There is
a "trendy" feel to the show,also, with not well-known songs chosen and
some Soul-type singing which becomes "switch away" repetative. In
the last show I saw two female singers sang classical harmonies
beautifully and were then given HERO to sing against a young female
singer completely at home with the choice. The two classical female
singers were then dropped missing out a chance of a little light and
shade among the contestants. Can it survive ?

It is difficult reviewing a new album by BUBLE because the quality
of performance and accompaniment is always outstanding and the
value of fourteen high quality tracks is exceptional. But....do we need
revisiting Sinatra's YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG and SOMETHING
STUPID and Bee Gees TO LOVE SOMEBODY and again Sinatra's
YOUNG AT HEART. There are new self penned tracks and infinate
variety offered here and it must have a four star rating but some of his
previous albums I have had no hesitation in awarding five star brilliance.
He is the granddaddy of easy listening and I have to admit his concistancy
is better than Sinatra's when the king himself was on the Reprise label.****.
